Acids are compounds that have at least one \(H^{+}\) ion that can dissociate from the compound in solution. Precise naming of acids is important because different acids have very different properties. For example, acetic acid in dilute form is used in cooking (as vinegar), whereas hydrofluoric acid is so toxic that even splashing a small amount on the skin can be fatal without proper treatment.
